The people and companies behind the Giro d’Italia: Part 1 Movico (pre-event)

This will be the first post in a series about the people and companies who are behind the organization of a large cycle race like the Giro d’Italia. This part will be about the Dutch logistics company Movico, who are responsible for the Hospitality trailers, the Podium, the Press Van and some of the Tribunes.

This is a Dutch company that provides all these services for most of the large cycling races in the Europe (Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and most of the spring classics). Its only a small group of people who work there and its incredible to believe they have to work at all these races and move and build up these “beasts” each day.

They just posted a few photos of their preparations in advance of  the Giro d’Italia on Twitter. @Movico_NL

This is the Giro Club, the VIP hospitality truck where all the Giro VIP will enjoy their wine and snacks while watching the final kilometers of the race. This truck is usually parked within 20 meters from the finish and is build up each day of the race.

They use this same truck for all races and just change the lettering on the outside.

More info about this small part of the organization of the Giro will follow. An in depth post with lots of photos about all trailers used at the Giro will follow as soon as the Giro starts.

Maxim Iglinskiy wins Liège – Bastogne – Liège 2012

LIEGE, BELGIUM – Maxim Iglinsky won Sunday’s cycling classic Liège-Bastogne-Liège. The 31 year old rider from Kazachstan arrived solo in the finish town of Ans, Belgium.

Enrico Gasparotto, (Astana as well) finished third just behind Italian rider Vincenzo Nibali.

Wet, Cold and lots of Wind

These were the awful conditions the riders had to ride in which made the  race even harder than it normally would be. The temperature did not come higher than 6c, that combined with rain, hail and wind made the race very enduring.

The weather did not keep away the fans though!

The races started with a freak accident, Spanish rider Igor Anto crashed in the neutral zone, fracturing his collarbone. After a calm opening stage of the race a lead group came together who would stay ahaed for most of the race. The group was made up of 6 riders, Dutchman Reinier Honig, Belgians, Kevyn Ista and Gregory Habeaux, Italians Alessandro Bazzana and Dario Cataldo and the German rider Simon Geschke.

Andy Schleck was not of much influence today

After they got a lead of over 12 minutes the peloton started chasing them down and the gap diminished quickly. Katusha did most of the work in the chase for their leader Joaquim Rodriguez.

Nibali Attacks!

The breakaway group was overtaken only about 20km form the finish as the favorites kept their legs quiet for  a long time. It was not until the slopes of Roche aux Faucons when they attacked. Nibali gained some time slowly, but he was unlucky that Iglinsky rode such a good climb in Saint-Nicolas.

The Kazach quickly gained time on Nibali and overtook him in the final kilometer of the race. Its the second sucess for Astana in 1 week.
